The soldier returns from the "Civil War", having successfully fought for his and his family’s freedom.
George Dean depicted here, enlisted with the 1st Missouri Colored Infantry, which was redesignated the 62nd U.S. Colored Troops. . He signed up in December 1863—in Pilot Knob—and was mustered into service at Benton Barracks in St. Louis. Gallantry in action two years later brought him promotion to sergeant. He continued to serve after the war ended, and was discharged in Brownville, Texas, in March 1866.
