The city of Ferguson and the entire St. Louis region found itself under intense international scrutiny this summer. The shooting death of Michael Brown sparked controversy and conversation the likes of which have not been seen in a generation or more. Sponsored by the Alliance of Black Art Galleries, the Visual Art Initiative’s “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot: Artists Respond” 18 venue exhibition features the visual work of artists from across the country in response to the shooting and its aftermath, including the role of law enforcement, media, and public relations.
